Being Single
What do you do if you find yourself single on Valentine’s Day? You obviously are aware the Valentine’s Day is built around being a holiday for couples of some variety. So, what if you do not fall into this category? Depending on your mind frame, this day can either be, at the very worst, utterly depressing, or, at best, just another day.
If you fall into the former category, here are some tips that are meant to help you out of this state of despair:
- Try not to personalise your singlehood on this day. Being in or out of a relationship does not say a thing about “who” you are. Do not let it.
- If you know ahead of time that you may be emotional on this day, plan around it. Do not put yourself in the position of even mingling with Valentine’s Day couples. Plan a night at home or find a single friend to hang out with.
- Just think, because you are single, you don’t have to spend your money buying a gift for someone else. But that should not mean that the money doesn’t deserve to be spent. Spend it on yourself! Buy yourself the flowers or chocolates, a professional massage, or renting that Western movie that she would never understand.
- Although we relate Valentine’s Day to being a day for love and lovers, this really is not the case at all. Valentine’s Day is really about commercialism and spending money. You are actually part of the luck crowd who gets to save some money.
- Nothing makes you feel good about yourself faster than doing something nice for someone else. Do you have a little brother or sister? Take them out for ice cream. Do you know someone else who does not have a Valentine this year? Send them a card or flowers and sign it anonymously. Putting a smile on someone else’s face will likely put one on yours too. Just what you need when you are feeling a bit low.
If you find that you fall into the latter category of just seeing Valentine’s Day as “just another day,” good for you, because in all reality, it is. You can still buy yourself something, just to pamper yourself on a day when everyone else seems to get pampered. Even though you may normally feel very content being single, it may be easy to allow this day to overtake your rational thoughts as you see all the couples congregating together in large numbers. Don’t let it! February 14th will pass, and the next day your sensible thoughts will return again. Stay strong!
